Fresh Web domain name up for grabs
There's a new land grab online. The new .co domain name, which went live today, should be highly coveted because the .com suffix -- coveted by corporations to direct Internet traffic to their websites -- is tapped out, with 90 million registered .com names.
In the days leading up to the .co launch, more than 80 of the top 100 global brands registered for the digital real estate, as have scores of Fortune 500 companies. In all, an estimated 28,000 companies and individuals have applied.
Among those who have staked their cyber claim include American Express, Apple, BMW, Coca-Cola, Disney, eBay, Facebook, Google, IKEA, Microsoft, MTV, Nike, Nokia, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Toyota, Twitter, Visa, Yahoo and more, says .CO Internet S.A.S. (www.COinternet.co), the registry operator of the .co domain.
The .co ID is especially valued because it can be interpreted as an abbreviation for "company," "corporation," "community" and "commerce."
